because your wallet slept with your wife? IDK, that the only reason why you’d want to subject it to such torture.

I just got rid of my 06. The motor is top notch, its all the e60 electronics you have to worry about =) That is a damn good price for relatively low mileage BUT - 2008 or 09 had the mid model facelift which also gets you much-less-shitty idrive upgrade. An 09+ 550i 6sp or 535i touring is in my future

I’ve heard from a bunch of ex-BMW techs that those engines are junk. Apparently the valve guides and seals go bad or something along those lines and they will burn a ton of oil and smoke all over the place because of it. And there was something about loud ticking too, don’t remember if that was something related or not. But I want to say usual repair costs were about 2/3 of what that car is listed for.

Another opponaut described his buying another one of those as ‘sticking my hand back down the garbage disposer’ From that I gather these are rather terrible money pits.
BUT GERMAN 6SPD V8 YOU MUST BUY IT IMMEDIATELY

Let me tell you something about the N62 V8: it’s a piece of shit. This is scientific fact. The 4.8 is marginally better than the first 4.4 version, but still requires significant monetary input to keep right, like a large percentage of the car’s value probably every couple years. It makes 4-cam Mercedes V8s look like cheap Chevy small blocks, and makes the M62 it replaced look like a Toyota 22RE.

Allow me to corroborate that. The first 4.4 versions have really soft valve guides, they seem to have improved that when they punched them out to 4.8, but they’re still crap. People try to just replace the stem seals but the problem is hammered guides. The last one we did took about $7k, and I advised against fixing it because the car wasn’t worth the repair cost. They leak like a sieve, have serious SAI carbon problems, the timing chain guides are crap, the PCV system is constantly overwhelmed, and in general any car they’re bolted into is a POS. In particular the E60 5 series and E65 7 series are two of the worst cars Germany has ever conceived. They make the W211 & M273 look like pillars of engineering excellence and simplicity. I don’t know any tech that likes them.
